2004 Southeast Watershed Roundtable Presentaion Click here for full agenda
The dominant transportation approaches of the past 50 years have provided incredible mobility, but they have come at a tremendous cost to the environment. There are increasing efforts at the national and state level to reduce the adverse impacts of transportation projects and to promote a more balanced approach to transportation. Although there are numerous obstacles to more sustainable transportation, there has been significant progress in beginning to fashion a new transportation paradigm. This presentation would provide an overview of the impacts of current transportation approaches in the Southeast. It would then explore some of the most promising changes in federal and state policies, including greater use of context sensitive design, steps to control stormwater runoff, modifications to street standards to reduce the amount of impervious surfaces, steps to create a more balanced approach to transportation, and measures to increase public participation in transportation decision-making. Examples will be cited of state DOT reforms and project changes throughout the Southeast. Contact: Trip Pollard Southern Environmental Law Center Phone: 931-598-0808 E-mail: tpollard@selcva.org
