Our team was asked by the Chattanooga Downtown Planning and Design Studio to study how the downtown plan could be environmentally sound. We were charged with articulating the issues, framing the problems, looking for larger integrative patterns, and proposing innovative solutions for an ecologically healthy downtown. The objective was to find practical ways for natural systems and urban development to reinforce each other. We make six main recommendations that are necessary to fully take advantage of our integrated approach. 1 An Integral Development Framework 2 A Green Infrastructure Network 3 An Integrated Water Network 4 A Green Neighborhoods Program 5 A Green Buildings Program 6 A Green Policy Framework Our presentation will focus on two aspects of the project: GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE NETWORK Green infrastructure is our city's natural life support system. It is a network of waterways, wetlands, forests, wildlife habitats, and other natural areas; greenways, parks and floodplains; urban woodlands, wild areas, and open spaces that support native species. The green infrastructure plan includes the following elements: * Network Patterns * Environmental Value Zones * Urban Reforestation * A Family of Parks * Connecting Green Links
